Global Timber Exporting Situation in 2022

First of all, from the perspective of import and export trade, the main countries exporting timber to China are still New Zealand, Russia and other countries.

Russia's timber exports to China in June increased slightly from May, reaching 1,221,500 m³. In June, China's softwood lumber imports totaled 1.4326 million m³, of which Russia alone accounted for nearly 1.2 million m³ of exports. New Zealand still mainly exports cork logs, and the softwood lumber exported to China was only about 1W square in June.

Overall, Chinese cork imports are slowly increasing but compared with 2021, there is a clear downward trend.

Judging from the export data to China, many countries show a downward trend compared to 2021. Take the following data as an example:

Germany, for example, saw a year-on-year decrease of -10.2%, -51.3% and -40.5% in sawn timber exports to China from April to June. The obvious fault in such data is mainly caused by the dispute between Russia and Ukraine and the shortage of timber, and the export volume of Germany has decreased significantly.

The situation in most European countries is the same as that of Germany. It is expected that from the third quarter, the reduction in European timber exports will be very obvious.
